Baltimore OriolesContract extension talks between the Baltimore Orioles and Erik Bedard stalled yesterday, increasing the likelihood that team officials will spend part of next week’s winter meetings contemplating trade offers for the ace left-hander.

The Orioles already have gotten several trade offers for Bedard, who went 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA last season and set a franchise record with 221 strikeouts. They figure to get more next week in Nashville, Tenn., though MacPhail said that the cooling of talks shouldn’t be taken as a sign that the Orioles are ready to unload Bedard.

Auburn TigersAs rumors swirled Thursday about the future of Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs stayed calm, at least in his comments to the media.

Several Arkansas media sources, including news station KNWA-TV, reported Thursday evening that Tuberville was close to a deal to become the next head coach at Arkansas.

But Jacobs told the Opelika-Auburn News he believes Tuberville will remain at Auburn.

My guess is that he stays put at Auburn but I guess stranger things have happened.

New Jersey NetsJason Kidd said he wants to stay put. After Kidd vented his frustration Monday about the awful state of the New Jersey Nets, a logical conclusion was that he wanted out. He insisted yesterday in the day that’s not the case. And then he showed last night what he is all about with another triple-double - his third this season, 90th of his career.

“I’m happy in New Jersey, happy being a Net,” Kidd said. “Nobody has asked for any trades or anything.”

Minnesota TwinsThe Minnesota Twins have begun listening to trade talks involving Johan Santana after exchanging recent contract proposals with the two-time Cy Young Award winner and blinking at his asking price. According to people familiar with the discussions, the Twins made Santana a five-year, $93 million offer this month, and Santana’s camp countered with a request for about $126 million.

The Twins told Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, they were willing to top the five-year, $91.5 million deal the Cubs gave pitcher Carlos Zambrano in August.

But Greenberg countered by citing the seven-year, $126 million deal the Giants handed Barry Zito last December.

Arkansas Razorbacks FootballRumors and some news reports circulated last Friday that Arkansas Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt is gone after this season either by resignation or firing, but that has been denied by Nutt and a host of UA administrators. All contend that Nutt’s job performance will be evaluated after the season, as has been the case every year since he was hired Dec. 10, 1997, from Boise State.

“Some days it seems like it’s gone by so fast, it seems like just yesterday Coach Broyles was introducing me as the head football coach,” said Nutt, a Little Rock native who has a 74-48 record at Arkansas. “And then some times it seems like, ‘Ooh, it’s been a long, long time.’”

Nutt received a contract extension through 2012 after last season, when he led the Razorbacks to a 10-4 record and outright SEC West title and was voted conference coach of the year by his coaching peers and the media.

University of MichiganMike DeBord and Ron English, currently assistant coaches for the Michigan Wolverines, are expected to be interviewed by athletic director Bill Martin to fill the vacant head coach position. The vacancy was created when Lloyd Carr announced his retirement on Monday after serving 13 seasons as the team’s head coach.

Martin has indicated that he intends to conduct an extensive nationwide search to find Carr’s replacement but the widely held view is that LSU Tiger coach Les Miles is at the top of Michigan’s wish list. Miles, a former Michigan player and assistant coach, has the Tigers positioned for a shot at the BCS National Championship.

National Football League NewsDespite thoughts of retirement, New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan hasn’t ruled out playing at least one more season. And sources close to him indicate that he’s looking for one last big payday. Of course, that could mean another offseason showdown with the Giants front office.

It will be interesting to see what happens this offseason but for now, Strahan is certainly earning every penny of his $4 million salary.

Major League BaseballIs Miguel Tejada headed back to California? The Los Angeles Angels are still looking for a bat and after yesterday’s trade of Orlando Cabrera to the Chicago White Sox, they have a new opening at shortstop. The Angels have expressed interest in acquiring Tejada in the past so this may be the perfect opportunity.

This would be a terrible move for the Angels. Why throw money at a player who’s best days are clearly in the past?
