Pete Carroll is reportedly close to signing to a five-year deal to become the new head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Carroll will make $7 million per year as the Seahawks President and General Manager. Carroll currently makes about $4 million per year and has been the head coach of the USC Trojans since 2001.

The L.A. Daily News is also reporting that Carroll has reached an agreement with Seattle but has not bothered to informed USC that he is leaving.

Pete Carroll did not officially inform USC he was leaving as of Friday afternoon but sources within the university said he accepted a job with the Seattle Seahawks and only needed to agree to final contract details.

USC sources said Carroll agreed to a five-year deal with the Seahawks with the only question how much power he would have in the organization. The Seahawks lack a coach and general manager and Carroll’s often expressed a hope to do both when he returned to the NFL.

All of which makes you wonder… is Petey leaving town just in time to avoid sanctions by the NCAA?

As you can imagine, rumors are flying about who will take over at USC if Carroll does in fact leave. Early reports had the school targeting Oregon State head coach Mike Riley. Others are speculating that Titans coach Jeff Fisher or Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio would be on the Trojan’s short list. Other names mentioned include: Chris Peterson, Kyle Whittingham, Mike Bellotti and even Jim Harbaugh’s name has been thrown out there.

I’ll update as I hear more.

UPDATE: It’s official… Pete Carroll has resigned.
